FTC mandates study on AI's effects on youth mental health by major companies
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken a significant step in addressing concerns about artificial intelligence and its influence on young users. The agency has ordered seven major companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, xAI, and Snap, to examine how their AI-powered chatbots are affecting the mental health of children and teenagers.
The FTC's order seeks detailed information on several key areas related to AI chatbot usage, such as how these companies monetize user engagement, develop and manage chatbot characters, and handle personal information. This move underscores growing concerns about the impact of AI on vulnerable populations, particularly youth.
An OpenAI spokesperson expressed the company’s commitment to addressing the FTC’s concerns, stating, "Our priority is making ChatGPT helpful and safe for everyone, and we know safety matters above all else when young people are involved. We recognize the FTC has open questions and concerns, and we’re committed to engaging constructively and responding to them directly."
AI chatbots are designed to simulate human-like communication, and their ability to foster interpersonal connections with users has sparked debates about their influence on social and emotional well-being. Dr. Erin Cole, an assistant professor of social work at Nazareth University, shared insights on this topic. "AI chatbots can very easily become replacements for face-to-face interaction with our youth population especially because, they’re just easier, right? You don’t have to worry about offending somebody, the chatbots are often designed to give you feedback that you’re looking for", Cole explained.
While recognizing the potential benefits of AI, Dr. Cole emphasized the importance of caution. She advocated for responsible usage of AI technologies by students, stressing the need for safeguards to prevent over-reliance. "There needs to be guardrails in place", she added.
The FTC’s decision highlights a growing focus on the intersection of technology and mental health, calling attention to the responsibilities of major tech companies in safeguarding young users. As these companies compile and share their findings, the results could shape future AI development and regulatory frameworks aimed at protecting youth.
